Hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation
In the course of their work as first responders, police officers routinely encounter people with mental illnesses and/or substance use disorders. However, many officers lack training in responding to mental health crises and considering options other than a hospital emergency department or jail. This webinar will examine two existing efforts to ensure successful interactions between police officers and people experiencing a mental health crisis: a mental health co-response strategy in Portland, Maine, and the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion initiative in King County, Washington.
